Certified nursing assistants have jobs in a physically and emotionally demanding work environment. The nature of the job is also very challenging, owing to the different personalities of patients and coworkers that CNAs encounter on a daily basis. The CNA certification possessed by an individual working as part of the allied health care services industry will attest that he or she is highly competent in administering the appropriate health-care procedure needed by patients.
But how does one qualify for CNA certification? And is it a requirement when one chooses to become a certified nursing assistant?
The process of obtaining CNA certification usually begins when the individual realizes that being a nursing aide is his or her career path. Personal qualities that fit in this type of job includes being physically strong and mentally stable. The job also requires the individual to be infinitely patient and compassionate, as well as highly knowledgeable in the work procedures necessary for interacting with and attending to patients.
Being highly knowledgeable in the work procedures can be developed in a CNA certification class. In class, students will be trained in the basics of nursing care; will obtain an in-depth understanding of human physiology and anatomy; will develop an awareness of resident rights; and will be provided with the know-how of controlling the spread of infection and protecting themselves from the risk of communicable diseases.
American states have different certification requirements for individuals planning to work as nursing aides. However, one common requisite declares that an individual should undergo a prescribed number of training hours from an accredited training institution before he or she can apply as a nursing assistant in any health care or medical facility.
Furthermore, the individual must be of legal age by the time he or she has finished training. Then, he or she must pass the CNA certification exam usually administered by the state or a reputable certification agency. Only after passing the exam will the individual be conferred with the designation of “certified nursing assistant.”
Training is usually offered in community colleges, high schools, and vocational/technical schools. Some nursing care facilities also offer training for those interested in becoming nursing aides. If, for any reason, the individual cannot attend traditional “classroom-setting” training, CNA certification exam online training is also available. Many institutions are now offering online courses for those interested in advancing their careers as nursing assistants but cannot spare the time to attend the classes. With online classes, students can access lessons at their own convenience and at their own pacing.
