To become EMT-certified, you first have to know what course you are going to take. EMT training courses vary according to the level of care provided. These include responder, basic, intermediate, and paramedic levels.
First responder training course takes about 45 hours of classroom instruction and another couple of hours for practical training. Students learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation, bleeding control, fracture stabilization, childbirth, etc. The basic functions of a first responder EMT are to assess the situation and the victim’s illness or injury until more advanced help arrives.
The basic EMT training course introduces students to the concepts and skills of EMT. They will learn about human anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, CPR, oxygen administration, and bleeding control. This course also prepares students to perform ambulance-based and pre-hospital life support functions.
The intermediate EMT training course, on the other hand, exposes students to more advanced patient care. They will learn how to administer drugs in various routes such as IV, muscular, or parenteral. They will also gain knowledge on how to assess patients. In addition to that, they will learn about advanced life support, patient transport and fluid therapy. Aspiring EMTs will need to spent a lot of time for classroom instruction, laboratory and clinical experiences to expose them to all kinds of practical situations.
Meanwhile, the paramedic level is the most advanced among the mentioned EMT training courses. In this level, students acquire skills on advanced life support. They will also receive certificates on trauma, pediatric and advanced cardiac life support. They will spend a lot of time riding in an ambulance, responding to emergency calls, and observing at emergency rooms. They will also learn specific skills on airway management, IV fluid, and administration of medications. Gaining the certificate qualifies the student to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedic Exam.
Once certified, the student can now professionally perform EMT duties. Other EMT jobs include being instructors, directors and managers of emergency services, and even sales agent for emergency medical equipment. Basic EMT salary ranges from $25,000 to $55,000.
